The purposes and cause of our chapter are best explained in the Preamble to the Gamma Xi Constitution:
Here at Gamma Xi, we pride ourselves on our performance and strong sense of tradition. Before the construction of the Tawes Fine Arts Center, the Maryland Bands rehearsed in the University's Reckord Armory. After the construction of the Tawes Fine Arts Building, the old band room was donated to the bands for storage. Now, the Brothers of Gamma Xi and Sisters of Beta Eta care for this facility and have adopted it as the chapters' home. You have not visited the UM Chapters until you have visited the Armory. The bands have now moved to the state-of-the-art Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. This facility allows the Gamma Xi Brothers to have a brand new atmosphere for musical performance and service to the bands. The 2001-2002 school year is Gamma Xi's 47th anniversary. We are also the oldest continually active chapter in our district thanks to the dedication of our Brothers.
